There is no clearer example of religious fanaticism dictating US policy, practices and law than the Alabama Supreme Court’s ruling on in vitro fertilization (IVF).
Alabama Chief Justice Tom Parker’s concurrence, in which he pontificates that all Alabamians fear “the wrath of a holy God, who views the destruction of His image as an affront to Himself,” repeatedly quotes the Bible and asserts life begins at conception, makes a very narrow interpretation of Christianity the key determinant in this legal decision. This statement, made part of the state record, totally dispels the idea that the judicial system even attempts to honor the separation of Church and State. Instead, an extremist agenda is being given full reign.
The impact reaches far beyond the medical world. It reaches directly into all of our individual bedrooms, and impacts any person who can be pregnant, or wants or doesn’t want to have a child.
It has absolutely nothing to do with a “greater good”. Instead, It is an all-out war on the Constitutional separation of Church and State – with an end goal being to return to more traditional gender roles. Denying women bodily autonomy is the key to achieving that goal.
As a direct result of this decision, IVF treatments across Alabama have “paused”. That is the same word – “paused” – that was used about abortion in states across the country after the overturning of Roe v. Wade. (Now the word used is “banned”.) The US Supreme Court ultra-conservative myopic majority has invited all of these attacks on reproductive freedom.
This decision will have impact beyond Alabama. In Florida, Republicans are working to pass legislation to allow civil suits for the “wrongful death” of a fetus – another state trying to enshrine fetal personhood. This broader strategy for fetal personhood includes banning contraception, as seen in Indiana, Ohio and Oklahoma.
