The US Supreme Court has struck down Roe v. Wade. And Republicans – led by former Vice President Pence – immediately started chanting for a national abortion ban. If Republicans gain the majority in the House of Representatives and the US Senate, and in 2024 take the White House, the very first vote will be to pass a law making all abortion illegal throughout the United States. (Mitch McConnell has already said as much.)
Immediate Impact: Abortion bans in at least 26 states, including trigger laws banning all abortions, are going into effect across the country. Most of these states are banning all abortions. Within hours of the decision, 9 states implemented bans on all abortions. In 30 days bans in 12 more states will go into effect. In another 9 states abortion access is uncertain. That is 30 states, out of 50!
People will have to travel hundreds and thousands of miles to get abortion care or to carry pregnancies against their will. The impact of this decision will disproportionately harm people who are Black, Brown and Indigenous, lower income, young, immigrants, have disabilities, live in rural areas, and members of the LGBTQI+ community.
We have been preparing for this moment for a long time, starting even before George H. Bush gave us Clarence Thomas and then George W. gave us Roberts and Alito. And in recent years — as Trump appointed Brett Kavanaugh, Neil Gorsuch, and Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court — we’ve been acting with increased urgency.
Abortion access is endangered nationwide. As we move toward 2024, anti-abortion groups have already announced their intention to pass a federal law to ban abortions across the country, and Mitch McConnell has already said so much. If that ban becomes a reality, no state — not even New York — will be safe.

New York did not simply “become” a safe haven for abortion rights. Choice Matters fought to make that happen. Since 1972, Choice Matters has led the charge: We identify pro-choice voters; challenge candidates on the issue; then educate voters about who to vote for and get them to the polls. And finally in 2019, we got a pro-choice majority elected to NYS’ Senate and Assembly, and a pro-choice governor – the essential trifecta!
We started working on the Reproductive Health Act in 2006; and when we finally got our pro-choice majority elected in 2019, we passed it into law. New York is what it is because we got pro-choice candidates elected – and only because we got them elected. It takes time but we can do this nationally! Remember: the vast majority of Americans did not want Roe v. Wade overturned. We can do this in the US Senate, but we need you on our side.
