20-Week Abortion Ban is in the Senate

Today the United States Senate will vote on whether to restrict a woman’s right to choose to the first 20 weeks of pregnancy. With only a slim Republican majority, the bill is unlikely to pass – but that’s not why Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has brought it to the floor. He is using it as a political maneuver.

Here in New York, we have Senators Schumer and Gillibrand on our side – we know that we can count on them to vote to protect a woman’s right to choose.

But as the crucial 2018 midterms approach, this 20-week ban vote serves as a political ploy, to keep candidates in red states scared to vote against the GOP agenda – access to abortion services in those states is a constant battle. This vote is simply a means of politicizing women’s right to reproductive health care, so that anti-choice conservatives can claim to be [sic] “pro-life” come November.

Three Democrats have stated that they will be voting in favor of the ban- Senators Joe Manchin (West Virgina), Joe Donnelly (Indiana), and Bob Casey Jr. (Pennsylvania.)

Come this November, the Blue Wave we saw here in Westchester County and as far south as Alabama must remember: A candidate that does not support Abortion Access is an Anti-Woman candidate. Anti-Choice Democrats are not true Democrats who support the pro-choice plank of the Democratic Party Platform, and they need to be kicked out of office alongside those GOP colleagues who vote against Choice.

This bill is the first federal legislative strike against Roe v. Wade of 2018. It won’t be the last. We must stay vigilant and make sure that the truth rings loud and clear: Abortion Access is Our Constitutional Right.
